Set inside the old Scotsman building, this is a grand, high-ceilinged room where a live pianist plays through lunch and breakfast — which, oddly enough, works in a family's favour, since the music covers a certain amount of small-person noise. There's a kids' menu, high chairs and vegan choices, and the room is spacious enough that a pram isn't a problem. The onion soup, the Sunday roast and the fries all get singled out repeatedly, and staff are generally warm and quick with recommendations. Two honest caveats: it's on the pricier side for what's really a special-occasion outing rather than a casual Tuesday, and the booking system can be shaky — more than one family has arrived with a confirmation and found no table waiting. Ring ahead, then ring again. One parent calls the atmosphere "cosy and welcoming".
