A proper family pub with a decent-sized garden — half covered, half open — so there's room to park a pram outside and let children have a bit of space when the tables inside feel close. Portions come in big and prices stay fair, which is the combination most parents are after; the steak gets the loudest praise, along with the peppercorn sauce, onion rings and the Sunday carvery (the gammon is a good shout too). Staff are consistently described as helpful and unflustered, high chairs and a kids' menu are in, and there are vegan options. Dogs are welcome in the garden. Worth knowing: food usually arrives quickly, but a large group waiting an hour isn't unheard of, and the kitchen can have an off day — one parent found their steak tough for the money.
