Detroit-style square slices with famously good waffle fries and dips — limited seating inside, but outdoor tables, high chairs and a bargain lunch deal.

Steak house · Newcastle upon Tyne
A steakhouse night out with kids in tow works better here than you'd expect — high chairs and a kids' menu are sorted, there's room to get a pram in, and the staff are attentive without hovering. The dining room is handsome and the noise level forgiving, though a late Sunday lunch after the midday rush is the calmest window if you're timing it around naps. The fries get more praise than almost anything else on the plate, the tuna tartare is worth starting with, and the Sunday roast comes with bottomless Yorkshires and beef gravy. Sticky toffee pudding lands warm and generous. Be honest with yourself about the bill first: fillet steak runs around £39, and when it's right it's very good, but at that price it's worth sending back anything that isn't.
