Right in the heart of Southampton, handy for the cruise terminals, this is a warmer, more relaxed room than the rosette on the wall suggests — buggy access, high chairs and a kids' menu mean you're not apologising for turning up with children. The cooking is genuinely good and the portions are enormous: lamb that falls apart, lasagna described as rich and flavourful, steak with a mushroom sauce people go back for, and even the vegetables done properly. Staff are helpful and friendly, and nothing feels like too much trouble. Prices are reasonable for the quality, though breakfast runs a bit dear. It's cosy rather than cavernous, so book ahead and ask about the pram when you do — and if you're driving, the paid parking space is worth arranging in advance. One family called the food "to die for".
