A log fire, low beams and views out to Horton Tower set the tone here, and under new management the kitchen has clearly found its feet. Portions are generous enough that sharing with a small person is easy — the Sunday roasts get the loudest praise, with cauliflower cheese and vegetables people remember, plus a bar menu of fish and chips, burgers and onion rings for less adventurous eaters. High chairs, a kids' menu and buggy access are all in place, there's outdoor seating for warmer days and free parking, and the staff are consistently described as warm and attentive rather than merely efficient. Worth knowing: drinks and sandwiches are on the steep side for a country pub, and the fine-dining side of the menu is a step up in price. Book ahead for Sunday. One visitor calls the burger "absolutely top notch".
