A family-run chippy just off the street front in York, with a takeaway counter at the front and a surprisingly large sit-down restaurant tucked out the back — which is the bit that matters when you've got a pram and a hungry toddler. There's room to settle in properly, high chairs, and a kids' menu, and the food arrives fast: ten minutes or so from ordering, cooked fresh. The haddock is the thing to get, huge portions, thin crisp batter that isn't greasy, and the chips are hand-cut and fried in beef dripping. Homemade mushy peas too. Prices are honest but not cheap at around £15 for a regular haddock, and a 10% service charge goes on the bill. Staff are warm with families. One thing to watch: they stop serving a good half hour before the posted closing time.
