Tucked into the old town but away from the tourist crush, this is a warm, low-key Scottish pub where the welcome does a lot of the work — the bar team are unfailingly patient and quick to make suggestions, which helps when you're arriving with hungry children in tow. Food comes out fast: the pie and the thick-cut chips get the most praise, the fish and chips holds up, and the small plates (the haggis fritter with whisky sauce especially) are good for sharing round a table. There's a kids' menu, high chairs and a few outdoor seats for warmer days, and Sunday brunch is the calmest slot — one parent describes it as "so peaceful". Worth knowing: drinks are on the pricey side, though the food is fairly priced, and it fills up in the evenings.
