Sixteenth-century beams, candlelight and a proper garden with a pizza oven outside — this is the kind of country pub that works for a family lunch without feeling stuffy. There's plenty of seating inside and a big free car park, so unloading a pram is easy, and there are high chairs, a kids' menu and vegan options. Portions are generous and the cooking is genuinely good: the smash burger, beef brisket and Thai yellow curry all get singled out, and the sticky toffee pudding has people coming back within the week. Staff are friendly and happy to let you taste a beer before committing. Two honest caveats — it gets very busy, so book, and on packed nights drinks and food can be slow. The candlelit dining area is also quite dark, which suits some children more than others.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
