Café · Okehampton
Tucked inside Okehampton's Victorian arcade, this little independent café is the kind of place locals treat as their own, and the welcome is genuinely warm rather than practised. It's small, so a pram takes a bit of manoeuvring at busy times, but there's outdoor seating in the arcade where children can watch shoppers go past while you finish a coffee — high chairs and a kids' menu are both there. Service is swift and cheerful, which matters when someone's hungry. The homemade cakes get the loudest praise: lemon cheesecake, frangipane tart, plus a proper little shortbread biscuit tucked beside your coffee. Jacket potatoes, sandwiches and baps for lunch, and the team happily sorted a vegetarian breakfast that wasn't on the menu. Prices are very reasonable. One parent calls the biscuits "so much better than the tasteless shortbread often seen".

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
