There's a proper sit-down feel here — chandeliers, big paintings and huge windows over the Lower High Street, which buys you a few minutes of a toddler staring out rather than wriggling. It's roomy enough to get a buggy in without shuffling tables, and the staff are consistently described as warm and attentive without hovering, which counts for a lot when you're juggling a high chair and a spilled drink. Food comes out hot and quickly; the salmon in white wine sauce gets mentioned again and again, as does the sticky Asian chicken salad, and breakfast is worth a look. There's a kids' menu, vegan options and clean, well-kept toilets. Worth booking at weekends and around Christmas, and the dessert list is on the short side.
