Tucked into Bowness, this is a proper hot chocolate house — thick, rich, chocolatey drinks that people rave about without being sickly sweet, and waffles that are entirely gluten-free, so coeliac families can order anything on the menu. Warm waffles with chocolate and strawberries are the thing to get, alongside a slice of the chocolate cake. Staff are lovely with children, happy to chat to a four-year-old, and there's a friendly resident dog wandering about, which most little ones adore (though she does roam under tables and into the kitchen, so worth knowing if anyone's wary of dogs). Kids' menu, high chairs, buggy access, outdoor seating and free parking all help. Two honest snags: it's a small, cluttered space, and food can be slow — one family waited 45 minutes — so order early rather than at meltdown point.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
