Tucked into the Malmaison down by the docks, this one works better with children than a hotel restaurant has any right to. The terrace is the draw on a warm day — dock views, shaded and heated seating, and enough room to park a pram without apologising to anyone; one family found it straightforwardly "pram, wheelchair friendly". Inside is dark and cosy rather than bright and bustling, so it suits an early dinner more than a boisterous lunch. The steaks are what people come back for, cooked properly, and the burger and frites arrive huge with enormous onion rings. Afternoon tea is a lovely occasion outing. There are high chairs, a kids' menu and vegan options, and the staff are attentive and chatty. Prices are fair for a hotel dining room — around £19.50 for burger and fries — but do book at weekends.
