A proper country pub with low beams and a fire-lit, cosy feel, this is the sort of place where nobody minds a bit of noise from your table. The big draw for families is outside: a genuinely good playground that suits toddlers and older kids alike, plus space for ball games, so you can let them run while you finish your drink. Parking is free and roomy enough for a motorhome, and there's a kids' menu, high chairs and buggy access inside. Portions are enormous — the hunter's chicken and homemade pie come up again and again, and one visitor couldn't finish a £6 prawn cocktail three times the usual size. Sunday roasts run around £17. It gets very busy, so book ahead; the odd dish (breaded plaice, lamb chops) can disappoint.
