Tucked just off the main strip at the end of chippy lane, this is an old-school city-centre pub that runs noticeably calmer than its neighbours — the sort of place you can duck into out of the rain and not feel in the way. The staff get warm mentions over and over: welcoming from the door, chatty, happy to point you up the road for food. High chairs and a kids' menu are listed, but several recent visitors found no food being served, so ring ahead if you're counting on lunch. Daytime is the family window; from Friday night it turns into karaoke, a DJ corner and a young crowd. Good Brains pints and a surprisingly wide tap selection. One regular calls it "chill and relaxed unlike anywhere else in the city centre".
