Restaurant · Durham
Tucked up a flight or so of stairs behind a set of beautiful tiled steps, this is a plant-filled, mismatched-chairs sort of place — mirrors, framed pictures, map-covered tables — with no music, just the hum of people talking. The scones are the thing: one long-time regular moved away six years ago and still hasn't found any to match, and there are heartier lunch plates and cakes alongside. Staff stay calm and organised when it's heaving, handing menus out while you wait to speed things along, and food lands fast. Worth knowing: it gets genuinely crowded and there's often a wait for a table, the stairs make it awkward with a pram, and the gluten-free scones are smaller for the same price. The little pavement seating area out front is pleasant, though the street past it is busy.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
