Tucked at the roadside near Langsett reservoir, this is a walkers' café first and foremost — three rooms kept properly warm (right down to the toilets) with a fire going on cold days, so a snowy morning ends comfortably. Almost all the baking happens on site from around 5am, and the cakes and buns sit out under the counter where children can point at what they want. The homemade chips draw people back on their own, the bacon and egg butties are well liked, and the big cooked breakfast and fresh tomato soup are generous. Food tends to arrive quickly. Two snags worth knowing: the indoor rooms are cramped, so a pram is easier in the garden behind the car park, and one parent found pies and quiche past their freshest — ask what's been baked that morning.
