The Small Canteen
A well-liked Newcastle restaurant with outdoor seating and mid-range prices, an easy choice for a family meal out.

Restaurant · Newcastle upon Tyne
Brunch is the reason to come — the Full Stack pancakes turn up fluffy under blueberry compote, vanilla crème fraîche and maple butter, and there's a dulce de leche version with banana and chantilly that eats like pudding. The hash browns, crisp and gold with sriracha aioli and parmesan, are worth ordering alongside. Portions are generous, so two children can happily share one stack. The room is cosy and relaxed rather than hushed, with staff who greet you warmly at the door, plus high chairs, a kids' menu, vegan options and outdoor seating for warmer days. Free parking takes one worry off the morning. It's not flawless — food has arrived slightly under-warm and the sourdough crust can defeat a blunt knife — but the coffee is properly made and the welcome feels genuine.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
